Pincushion Love

My Funny Valentine

~ For The January Book Club project, I made a cute wall hanging.

~ I used a lid from a long lost box and altered it. On the back, I created the scalloped edge with a small Fiskars heart punch and glued them in place. The inside of the lid, I glued down decorative paper to which I spritzed with Candy Apple Glimmer mist.

Using random photo's that I keep in a box on my desk for such a occasion, I found one to be the focal point, adding foamy wings found at the craft store. I used stickles on the wings and in the mini cup cake liners. I then punched out the photo's with a craft punch and postioned them in with foam tape.

With a fiskars hand punch I attached red twine on the top and bottom.

I worked on Candice's candy box, but I just didn't feel inspired to use photographs today, so I gathered a bunch of my favorite pink & red stash items. I'm planning on leaving the box out as I try to come up with some valentine projects next month. I know this has been done before, but I have never done it and that's what this book club idea is all about...getting around to actually doing the projects you always mean to do, but don't quite get to.

I'll post our February book in a couple of days.

An Interview with Candice Carpenter

Candice graciously agreed to answer a few questions about her project in our January Book Club's selection, Foof A Life, by Erin Trimble

Here's what she had to say:

1. How did you come up with the idea for the Box of Chocolates Project? What was your inspiration?

We were asked to really think outside the box for this publication and come up with some really sweet, vintage inspired, handcrafted gift ideas. It was around the time when I recently discovered a lot of my grandparent's photos from their life together...and I was greatly inspired by a Martha Stewart magazine’s image of a box of chocolates with little cupcakes liners inside...all filled with crafty goodies. Just an interesting packaging idea. So...I thought of making this greeting/gift like a box of chocolates that could later be displayed...and instead of goodies or sweets inside the liners, I added photos...all bringing up sweet memories of their past 50+ years together.

2. Are there are any tips you can share with us to make sure we are successful with the project?

Nothing in particular really. Just get out your sandpaper, a good glue stick and your brayer to smooth out the paper if/when covering the box.

3. It’s been couple of years since you designed this project, is there anything you would add to update or change it? Any recommended variations?

Nope, I like the simplicity of the project. I really focused on the photos and how each of them were staggered periods of their life together. Getting the photos scanned and printed and organized was half the battle for me.

4. What is your favorite project in the Foof A Life book? (That you designed)

I absolutely LOVE the party hat I designed for the book. It is toward the front and has a picture of my mom on the hat...and when she saw the project published in the book and saw her sweet baby photo...she was ecstatic. Her giddiness meant the world to me...and no matter what the project is, it is the happiness and inspiration that comes from it that means the most to me. I still have the hat, of course, and it now represents a time in my life and memory with my mom and I am so, so very thankful for that.

5. What is your favorite project in the Foof A Life book by one of the other designers?

Don't laugh too hard at me...but I don't even own a copy of the book! I gave all my copies away to friends, family and for prizes/donations at crops and event. LOL! I should go buy one! From what I do remember, I liked the entire publication as a whole and no one project by itself because it covered so many different ideas and styles. I am such a huge fan of all of the designers...it's like they can't produce a bad project. Know what I mean? I have to say that I love everything that Kim Henkel and Jenni Bowlin do especially. They are so inspiring...and seriously sweet in person on top of it! And I am so very thankful that Teresa Mcfayden asked me to contribute to the book!

January Book Club Announcement!

This month's book is Foof-a-Life.

I thought we could do a very easy project, with a Valentine's Day theme, so we'll start on page 35, with the Box of Chocolates project by Candice. If you want to do a different project from the book, feel free. I'm just trying to keep it simple this month, since we are getting a late start.

I worked through this book awhile ago and did a couple of the projects. You can see my blog entry about it here. I love the book and, although it's a couple of years old, it's worth buying for the inspiration alone.

So, go get the book and then get to work! Have fun. And check back here in a couple of days. I'll have an interview with Candice up soon! She'll be talking about her inspiration and give us some tips on what works and what doesn't for this project.

Announcing the Goddesses of Crafts Creativity Book Club!

Here's how the book club works. Each month, on the first of the month, I'll post a project from a book or magazine that we are all going to work on. Go to the store and buy the book or magazine, or order from the links I provide for Amazon.com. I'll try to have the book or magazine up a month ahead, but won't post which project we are doing until the first of the month. (Keep on the sidebar to keep current.) That way, you have a chance to find the book. Complete the assigned project and post it on your blog by the last day of the month. Be sure to link back to our blog on your entry. Then come back to the challenge entry and post the static link to your entry on your blog. This is a great way to actually DO all those projects you bookmark in your magazines and books. We will cover a wide range of techniques and crafts, so everyone will get a chance to work on what they love. If you want to do another project from the book of the month, you can still play along! The goal is to actually do at least one project from the book of the month. If something other than the chosen project catches your fancy, do it!

I'll do my best to give you lots of extras. I know there will be prizes involved. I know that I'm going to try to get authors/designers to guest blog here. I know that I'll share my thoughts on the project and give tips and tricks on what worked and what didn't. Keep this blog bookmarked so you don't miss out on a minute of fun. Oh! Don't forget to tell your friends!

January 2009 Meeting

We had a wonderful beginning to our new year as a club. Pat made delicious curry, Michelle brought bread and Kathryn supplied the rice. I, of course, provided cupcakes. We visited and talked about our creative goals. Many goddesses are using this year to really focus on creativity rather than the business of crafting. I am going to start a creative book group of sorts. I'll pick a project from a book or magazine and then everyone will work on it for the month. Projects are due at the end of the month. Post your results to your blog with a link back to this blog. Be sure to leave a comment on the challenge post too, so that we can all come and see how you did. I'll be trying to get some of the authors to guest blog for the challenges and I'll try to get some prizes going too. I'll post January's challenge very soon. Anyone can play along-you don't have to be a member of our club.

The Goddesses are also going to reimplement our tradition of teaching each other new techniques this year. In February, Pat will show the club how to make fabric yo-yos. I'm pretty excited about it. It's an easy technique (I'm told), but I would love to see it done in person. That always makes things easier.

Holiday Boutique 2008!!!

We decided to have a Holiday Craft Boutique on Sunday, December 3 from 1pm-4pm. All Goddesses should:

-Make two dozen cupcakes to bring-be creative!
-Bring a bottle of wine to serve

I received the following email from Lydia and, with her permission am posting it here to keep everyone in the loop. I let Lydia know we are here for her & will miss her!

Dear Laura,

I'm sorry that I haven't been good at keeping up with the correspondences
concerning the Craft Club. I'm not going to be able to participate in the
club at this time - at least for the next few months. My heart's not in it
right now. I hope I can rejoin you all at a later date. I've been very
preoccupied during my entire trip to Michigan and ever since. My mother's health has
deteriorated considerably in the last year and my dad just celebrated his 87th
b-day. Fortunately, he is reasonably in good health considering his age. Even
though they have a live in caretaker for most of the week they are just too
far away from all three children to be of any help.
Up until now my father has been very resistant to moving to California.
My father has finally agreed for us to at least start looking into tentative
plans for relocation. I'm going to be helping my brother with whatever I can.
I know that October is my month for organizing something for the Club. I
still think that everyone would enjoy the Gemfaire at the Orange County
Fairgrounds even if I don't join you.
